ANNOUNCEMENT:

IPAC LEGISLATOR-EXPERT FORUM

June 2024

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) has today launched a Legislator-Expert Forum that brings together IPAC lawmakers and senior representatives from a selection of the world’s leading China-focused think-tanks and research centres.

Lawmakers cannot easily commission research, convene briefings, or develop policy together with broad expert input. Conversely researchers often seek a political audience for their work, yet the pathways to achieving political impact are far from streamlined.

The Forum provides a regular platform for experts to brief lawmakers on important new research and thinking on China, and for legislators to discuss and develop campaign and policy ideas with experts. The forum comprises IPAC legislators, who will attend ad hoc, two convenors, and a Standing Group of Experts, who are drawn from world-class institutions, representing a diversity of viewpoints and regional perspectives.

The Forum is designed to complement the role of IPAC’s issue-based Expert Advisor Group.

While the Legislator-Expert Forum is an IPAC initiative, it is not associated with any political party, and involvement does not imply agreement with any other participant or organisation, nor does it imply association with any particular perspective on China.

The Legislator-Expert Forum will be co-convened by Reinhard Bütikofer and Sophie Richardson, and will meet three times a year. The first meeting will be in June 2024.

The Legislator-Expert Forum Standing Group of Experts:

  • Tomoko AKO - Associate Professor, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo.
  • Justin BASSI - Executive Director, Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), Canberra.
  • Kerry BROWN - Professor of Chinese Studies, and Director of the Lau China Institute at King's College, London.
  • Bonnie GLASER - Managing Director, German Marshall Fund Indo-Pacific Program, Washington DC.
  • Francois GODEMENT - Senior Advisor for Asia, Institut Montaigne, Paris.
  • Mikko HUOTARI - Executive Director, The Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), Berlin.
  • Srikanth KONDAPALLI - Professor in Chinese Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
  • I-Chung LAI - President, Prospect Foundation, Taipei.
  • Francisco URDINEZ - Director, Impact of China on Latin America and the Caribbean (ICLAC), Chile.
