IPAC statement on the rejection of debate on Uyghur rights at the UNHRC

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) deeply regrets the decision of the UN Human Rights Council to reject a debate on the situation of human rights in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

This decision comes just weeks after the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights published its report into abuses in the Uyghur Region, acknowledging that atrocity crimes may have been committed, and comes amidst a growing body of independent legal opinion providing credible evidence for Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity in the region.

By refusing further discussion on this report, the PRC government is demonstrating its fear that its brutal campaign of persecution against the Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim Turkic groups in the Uyghur Region will be further exposed. We call again on the UN and its member states to ensure that formal legal determinations are pursued and that the PRC government is held to account for these egregious abuses.
